The cabin sits at the end of a long arm with a beach on one side and a stream on the other side, leading to a stunning waterfall, with the sound of running water always in earshot of your cabin space. This is Hugh's favourite location, a place they used to portage to from upstream Telescope Lake to explore and shorelunch. Hugh built the original cabin here in 1969 as his own personal get away. Hugh and Craig replaced it with a new cabin in 2001 with a large picture window and a waterfront deck.

Optic Lake is shaped like a pair of glasses, connecting two clearwater basins. The lake is thirty-five miles west of Red Lake, within the Woodland Caribou Provincial Wilderness Park. Guests can portage to excellent Glenn Lake, where the Carlsons used to have a trapline, and where there are two boats and two motors for more great fishing. Guests can also venture upstream to Edgar Lake, a great place to take young people for walleye and smaller northern fishing.

The best fishing is off the dock

Lakers on Optic

Lakers on Optic by Craig Benson

Hi, we fished for lakers at Optic in 2002. We used 17 lb test with lure jensen bells on the end. Then we used a treble hook threaded through a sucker minnow. Worked very nicely. We caught 5-10 fish per morning. Most were 4-12 lbs. We just trolled in the deepest water. It was great fun but most of the time was spent fishing for walleyes, since the rest of our party enjoyed that more.
